Wallace C. Avery, age 93, of Lansing, passed away peacefully at home on December 3, 2014.
Born March 30, 1921, in Sayre, PA, he was a son of the late Fred and Lydia (Bates) Avery. After graduating from high school in Sayre in 1941, Wallace proudly served his country with the US Army from 1942 until being honorably discharged in 1946, at which point he settled in the Ithaca area. Wallace married Helen Listar and they enjoyed 58 years of marriage until her death in 2005. Wallace was employed as a meat cutter with the Co-op Market, and in the last few years prior to retirement, with TOPS Market. A member of the Groton American Legion, Wallace also enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Donald Avery and his siblings, Russell, Earnest, Eva, Margaret, Edna, Dorothy and Walter.
Wallace is survived by a son, Dick Avery of Freeville; grandson, Garth Avery (Anna Simonak) of WA; daughter in law, Natalie Scholl of Trumansburg; sister in law, Marge Listar of Lansing and a large extended family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Hospicare, 172 E. King Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850.
Family will be present to receive friends from 1-2 pm, Sunday, December 7th at Lansing Funeral Home, 32 Auburn Rd., Lansing, NY, immediately followed at 2pm by a funeral service, officiated by Rev. Natalie Scholl. Burial, with Military Honors, at North Lansing Cemetery, will be at 11am, Monday, December 8th.
