Shirley Mae Taylor Tuthill passed away peacefully Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Oak Hill Manor, Ithaca, NY at the age of 90.
Born June 11, 1923, in Dickey, ND, Shirley was a daughter of the late Cecil and Pearl (Norton) Taylor. In 1944 Shirley was married to Fred Andrew Tuthill, Jr., who, after 59 years of marriage, preceded her in death in 2003.
A graduate of Waverly High School and Elmira College, Shirley taught high school business at several districts throughout NY State, including Waverly, Trumansburg, Oneida, and concluded her career at Sweet Home High School in Amherst. Shirley created many beautiful quilts, which, along with her needlepoint and counted cross stitch designs, will be admired by family members for years to come. She also was a member of several genealogical and historical societies and did extensive genealogy research of the Taylor/Norton and Tuthill/Van Auken descendants.
Shirley is survived by her sister, Dorothy Bryant (Fred) of Palm Harbor, FL; daughters, Judith Barkee (Doug) of Interlaken, NY, Cynthia Livering (Earl) of Ocala, FL; grandchildren, Matthew Barkee (Chris), John Barkee (Alison), both of Interlaken, NY, Kristin Roy Macarchuk (Patrick) of Tuckahoe, NY; great grandchildren, Taylor and Samantha Barkee and Natasha Macarchuk; and nephews, Stephen Bryant (Elaine) and Charles (Butch) Crowningshield.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the wonderful care provided by Brookdaleâs Sterling House, Comfort Keepers and Oak Hill Manor Nursing Home.
Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, NY, will take place in the spring.
