Ruth Lamont Juracka passed away on Monday, October 8, 2012, at the age of 92. She lived independently in her own home until the end of her life. Ruth volunteered for the past 18 years at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office, attended weekly exercise classes, was an active member of Lansing United Methodist Church and traveled to Alaska yearly to visit her relatives.
A Lansing resident for over 61 years, Ruth was born October 6, 1920, in Rochester, NY, to the late J. Lee and O. Blanche (Eiss) Lamont. She was a 1938 graduate of Scotia High School, and went on to earn a Bachelorâs degree from Syracuse University and a Masters from Cornell University. She served in the WAVES, Womenâs Auxiliary Voluntary Emergency Services, for two years during World War II.
In 1956, Ruth drove the Alcan Highway to Fairbanks, Alaska with her sister. She enjoyed travel and went through the Panama Canal on two occasions, fifty years apart. Ruth was always well dressed, was an avid reader, team bowler and actively followed many team sports.
Ruth taught in numerous public school systems throughout NY State, retiring in 1983 from the Lansing Central School District after 37 years of teaching Home Economics to several generations of students.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Anthony J. Juracka, and her sister and only sibling, Janet Lee Lamont Lang. Ruth met her husband, Tony, while he was working on the new wing of the Lansing Central School in 1952.
She is survived by her nieces, Cheri Marston (Erin) and their children, Brooke and Kyle Marston of Anchorage, AK, Debbie Lang Lovs, and her children, Katelyn and Kelly Lovs, of Anchorage, AK; her nephew, Michael Lang, of Anchorage, AK and brother-in-law, Herbert Lang (Marianne) of Anchorage, AK. She leaves many friends in the Lansing area, as well as in Alaska.
A memorial service, officiated by Rev. Jane Sautter, will be held at Lansing United Methodist Church, 32 Brickyard Rd., Lansing, NY, on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at 1:00 pm, followed by a reception at the church. She will be buried next to her husband at Pine Grove Cemetery, Lansing, NY. An additional memorial service will be held in Anchorage later this year.
