Richard L. “Silly” Sill, 76, of Lansing, NY, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by family on March 5, 2024. Born on May 12, 1947, in Sherwood, NY, Rick was the son of the late Glenn and Norma (Chaffee) Sill. After attending Lansing Central Schools, Rick went on to graduate from Groton High School prior to being drafted by the US Air Force in 1966. During his time of service in the Vietnam Era, Rick was trained as a B-52 mechanic and spent time in Guam, Thailand, Hawaii and Vietnam, earning an honorable discharge in 1970 with the rank of SGT. On November 17, 1990, Rick married the former Serena Adams. Together, they built a life and family together on Conlon Road in Lansing.
Rick was employed for several years at Emerson Power Transmission before pursuing his passion of construction and working as a Foreman for Cosentini Contruction in Ithaca. He was a lifetime member of the Lansing Fire Department and a member of the Lansing Rod & Gun Club.
In addition to his passion for building things, Rick was very involved in hare scramble racing and spent countless weekends at the races in support of his children. He was also known to his family and friends as the world’s best pig roaster and could frequently be found barbecuing chicken. Nothing, however, was more important to Rick than spending time and building relationships with his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Serena, Rick is survived by his children, Marie Bartholomew (Brian), Daniel Sill (Lauren), and Melanie Boynton (Eric); six grandchildren, including twins on the way; sister, Anne Teeter (John Ryan); several nephews; and his dog, Dixie, and cat, Lily. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ronnie Sill.
A celebration of Rick’s life will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the Lansing Rod & Gun Club, 55 Salmon Creek Road, Lansing, NY 14882.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Rick’s name may be directed to the Lansing Fire Department, 80 Ridge Road, Lansing, NY 14882.
