James Harry Cornell, 73, formerly of Buffalo Hill Road in Brooktondale, went home to be with the love of his life, Beverly Bentley, while surrounded by family at the home of his grandson in Newark Valley on July 22, 2024. Born in Ithaca on February 13, 1951, he was the son of the late Alfred Lawrence Cornell, Sr. and Helen (Shevalier) Cornell. James attended Ithaca City School District before embarking on his career and passion as an auto mechanic. Most recently, he was employed by Sure Shift Transmissions in Newfield.
James will be remembered as a funny and giving person who would do anything for anyone. He had a love for the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and riding his motorcycle.
James is survived by his children, Tracy Hillman, Jennifer Cornell, Melissa Hillman, Richard Bentley, Rick Bentley, Danny Bentley, Janet Liddington, Patty Tanner Hines and Terri Bentley; siblings, Alfred Cornell, Jr. (Helena), Howard Cornell (Bonnie Potter), Charlotte Massey and Jerry Cornell (Frances Shaw); many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and lifelong friend, David Liddington, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and life partner, Beverly Bentley; sister, Mary Cornell; daughter, Hilda Bentley; brother-in-law, Skip Massey; and best friend, Fred Hines.
In keeping with James’s wishes, services will be private. A Celebration of his Life will be announced at a later date.
