With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Delbert Meade Smith, a sweet and gentle soul who left this world peacefully at the age of 81. Delbert was a sweet and humble man whose life was a canvas of love, kindness and dedication. His legacy will forever be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Born in Greene, NY, he was the son of Wilma and Meade Smith. Delbert is predeceased by his parents and sisters, Dolores Smith and Carolyn Lincoln, as well as his brother, Dennis Smith. Del is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Carol Ann; his very special daughter, Jennifer Whittaker, and son-in-law, Sean Whittaker; and much-loved grandchildren, Nicholas and Rachel Whittaker. He is also survived by his brothers, Daniel (Mary) Smith and Deryl (Michelle) Smith, and sister, Yvonne Smith. Delbert found joy in the warmth of the Whittaker family, who graciously included him and Carol in their family gatherings, creating lasting bonds.

From a young age, Del had natural curiosity and a remarkable gift for understanding how things worked. This inquisitive trait carried him through life, culminating in his graduation from Williamson High School in Tioga, PA. In 1962, he joined the United States Air Force, dedicating his skills and time to the safety and service to others. He fell in love and married Carol while working for the Navy at Hunters Point and Mare Island San Fransico. After his military career, Delbert continued to serve his country as a civilian employee for the Seneca Army Depot until his retirement in 1993.

An avid outdoorsman, Delbert found peace in the natural beauty of Cayuga Lake and the landscapes of upstate NY. He spent countless hours fishing, hunting and simply relishing in the changing views of the lake, creating treasured memories with family and friends. As a talented handyman, there was little he couldn’t fix, and he was always eager to lend a hand to others, doing so with generous spirit and without expectation.

At the heart of Delbert’s life was his family, whom he was fortunate to live close to and share in their everyday joys. As a devoted grandfather, he inspired Nicholas and Rachel with his boundless love, attention and playful spirit, ensuring that they felt cherished and supported.

Delbert was a man of quiet strength, humility and had a quick sense of humor that brought smiles to those around him. He lived by example, imparting valuable lessons about hard work, patience, and kindness to all who crossed his path.

In honoring Delbert’s wishes there will be no formal services. Those wishing to commemorate his life are encouraged to consider a donation to Cayuga Medical Center Foundation, 101 Dates Drive, Ithaca, NY 14850, or a Veterans Charity of your choice. His warm spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of his loved ones.
