Bernard âBarneyâ Joseph Baldwin, age 76 of Lansing, passed away on May 23, 2016 at the Hospicare residence in Ithaca.
Born to Guy and Lena Baldwin in Elmira, NY on August 9, 1939, Barney was raised from a young age by Elmer and Mildred Bush. He was married to Sandra Ostrander Baldwin on September 12, 1959, and they have made their home in Myers for the past 34 years.
Over the years Barney was employed as a paper cutter, a landscaper and for over 20 years was owner of Barneyâs Baits on Myers Road in Lansing. He was best known for his humor and stories. Barney enjoyed fast-pitch softball, bowling and, of course, fishing. He often wrote poems on cards for friendsâ special events as well as for the nurses who cared for him at Hospicare.Â
In addition to his parents and foster parents, Barney was preceded in death by his brothers, Mahlon, Mitchell, and Edward Baldwin, Robert and William Bush; sisters, Ruth Decker, Frances Richards, Mildred Utter and Virginia Ketter.Â
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sandra Ostrander Baldwin; a son, James K. Rye of Mount Joy, PA; Daughter, Kathleen Kaye Harrington (David) of Newfield; sister, Betty Baldwin of Elmira; brother, Walter Baldwin of VA; brothers-in-law, Rexford Ostrander (Bonnie) and David Ostrander; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Family will be present to receive friends from 5 -7 p.m., Wednesday, June 1st, at Lansing Funeral Home, 32 Auburn Rd., Lansing, NY. A memorial service, officiated by Pastor Travis Formoso, will begin at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 2nd at the funeral home, followed by prayers of committal at Pine Grove Cemetery in Lansing.
