Thelma Mae (nee Appel) Schaffer, 81 of 1145 Warren Road, Ithaca, New York formerly of Allentown, PA, passed away on May 16, 2001 in Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca, NY, surrounded by her loving family. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother grandmother and sister. Thelma was born August 31, 1919 in Allentown, Pennsylvania to Harry and Lizzie Mae (nee Leh) Appel. On April 8, 1939 she married Francis "Curly" Schaffer with whom she shared 57 years together before he passed away in 1996. In 1985 Thelma and Curly moved from Allentown to Lansing to live with their daughter and her family. Thelma was a homemaker most of her life and dedicated herself to family. Thelma, affectionately known as Mimi to her grandsons and their friends, loved to go to sporting events to watch her grandsons play or coach. Her warmth, humor and courage will remain in the hearts of those who knew her. Thelma is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Gail and Henry Neubert of Lansing, NY; grandson Hank Neubert and his fiance Amanda Verba; grandson Thomas Neubert and his fiance Jessica Taylor of Euclid, Ohio; sister, June Appel,sister and brother-in-law Lois and Dick Frain, brother and sister-in-law Merritt and Betty Appel, sister-in-law Mary Appel, sister-in-law Ruth Appel and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, Thelma was predeceased by her brothers Harry, Lewis and Kermit. Funeral services are private. There are no calling hours.
