Newfield, NY

Eugene (Gene) G. Redman Sr., age 77, of Newfield passed away at home surrounded by family on March 31, 2015.

Born on February 27, 1938 in Waverly, NY to Ethel (Kreh) and Hector Redman, Gene attended school in Waverly and graduated in 1957. While attending high school he joined the Navy Reserves in 1955 and went active upon graduation. He served on the USS Cotton until his honorable discharge in 1959, and continued his service with the Navy Reserves until 1989. Gene moved to Newfield in the early 60's with his first wife Anne Cortwright. He worked as an auto mechanic for many years in Ithaca and Waverly and briefly owned the Texaco Station in Waverly. Gene worked at Meadow Brook Trailer Park repairing, delivering and installing mobile homes and double wides all over the state. In the mid 70’s he started working for Mancini -Ferrarra and Sons and joined the Laborer's Union. In his retirement he dug graves for Greensprings Natural Cemetery in Newfield. He enjoyed working around the house and at Redman Pond with his backhoe. He loved to get together with family and friends at Redman Pond, and hosted many Sr. Citizen picnics, family reunions, graduation parties, Navy unit reunions and impromptu get togethers. Gene was a strong but gentle person. He would drop everything and help if you needed it, often at times into the night welding a tractor part for a local farmer. He loved to spend time with his kids and was the hauler of Gene Juniors pulling truck “Under the Influence”. One of his favorite sayings was “I’ll hang on to this, you never know when you might need it.” He was a past president of the Newfield Sr. Citizens, and assistant scout master of Newfield Troop 34. He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. The last few years Gene was known for taking his gun for a walk during hunting season, as he rarely saw anything.

Gene is survived by Deborah Scott Redman, his wife of 28 years; his children, Eugene G.(Sue) Redman, Jr., of Newfield, Sharon Vrooman of Morrisville, NC, Melissa Redman of Groton and Marc Redman of Newfield; five brothers-in-law, Charles (Sam) Strange of Athens, PA, Derrick (Kim) Scott of Bellingham MA, Darrell (Michelle) Scott of Mason, NH, Robert (Carol) Scott of Trumansburg, NY, Donald (Suzy) Scott of Trumansburg, NY; grandchildren, Shelby and MacKenzie Moravec, Sean (Janessa) Redman and Katherine Redman; great grandchildren, Rylan Laurenzo, Jake and Levi Redman, many nieces, nephews and former wife Anne Cortwright Empson.
